Shadow Lake Nature Preserve is a small peat bog on the outskirts of Maple Valley, Washington. It's a quaint, idilic spot that provides tours and programs for visitors, especially children. This past summer I had the opportunity to participate in their annual event in which local artists come for a day to create works on site or to gather inspiration. The artists then had one week to complete their works and return them to Shadow Lake for display throughout the summer.
These 10" square paintings were started while I was at the bog. There is a small boardwalk that extends a little ways out into their Frog Pond, which is mostly dry in the summer. It made for a lovely spot to study the light in the Preserve with interesting shadows and reflection on what little water there was at the time.
